Mackay Council, Road Widening

BaseBind

The Mackay Road Widening Program has been implementing BaseBind for close to a decade, delivering durable, long lasting road surfaces.

The process begins by pulling up the chosen areas and boxing them out, ready for pre-mixed BaseBind to be added.

The existing material is then blade-mixed off-site with BaseBind and transported back to the site where it is laid, compacted, and sealed to form a stable, high strength and hydraphobic sub-base.

This method of sub-base preparation is one of the most effective ways to build roads that will last. Water is one of the biggest threats to road infrastructure, when it seeps into an untreated sub-base, it weakens the foundation, causes cracking and potholes, and often leads to premature failure of the surface above. The result is unsafe driving conditions and a cycle of reactive maintenance that steadily drives up costs for local councils.

Studies have consistently shown that reactive maintenance, while cheaper in the short term, is far more expensive over the life of a road, because the underlying deterioration never stops.

By stabilising the sub-base with BaseBind from the outset, councils can significantly reduce water ingress, extend the service life of their roads, and move away from the costly cycle of patch-and-repair. It's a proven, cost effective approach.
